Abstract:
The issue of negative perception of own appearance in contemporary society, including the role of mass media in forming unrealistic standards is discussed. The authors cite studies reflecting the role of general perfectionism in creating problems of perception of one's own appearance, as well as data to prove the necessity of studying physical perfectionism as a type of perfectionism. The authors analyze national and foreign studies of physical perfectionism and cite foreign data on frequent occurrence of physical perfectionism and its close connection with the worst forms of general perfectionism, such as dissatisfaction with one's own body, eating disorders and emotional discomfort. The authors also cite the first national studies of effects of physical perfectionism on emotional well-being of adolescents and young people, demonstrating influence of macro-social factors, such as the habitat, on the level of physical perfectionism and emotional wellbeing of young people
