Abstract:
[An analysis is made of the possibility of applying the energy detector model to the description of threshold measurements for pairs of gratings of the same spatial frequency and contrast, but with an arbitrary phase shift. It is assumed that when observing asynchronous heterophase gratings, the apparent motion arises due to temporal summation. As a result of the summation of trace mappings of the first and second lattices, a total mapping is formed, which in the general case has a continuously changing phase; the result of the summation will be the integral motion of the lattice in the trace space. Such an explanation is consistent with the continuous (smooth) and coherent nature of the apparent movement. It is also confirmed by the agreement between the tracking integrator model and the thresholds. Our explanation does not require the high temporal resolution of the visual system, which would be necessary to explain the effect of apparent movement that occurs in our conditions on the basis of correlation models and, in general, models that involve the comparison of sequentially presented patterns.]
