Abstract:
The fundamental work of Columbia University specialist sets out the concept of teaching scientific principles, based on the psychology laws. Built in the format of a textbook for teachers, it contains here the empirical and theoretical principles of scientific psychology, as of the time of reprint (1926). L. Vygotsky, in detailed introduction, accompanied by presentation of his own views on the psychology of growing up and upbringing, emphasized that E. Thorndike first revealed to teachers the scientific foundations of educating process and formed foundations of world pedagogical psychology. L. Vygotsky, then, pointed out, that the author of this book understands nature of education as a change (dynamics) and says HOW to implement its principles, leaving teachers, WHY and WHAT to change in specific conditions of the educational environment. As shortcomings («flaws») of this book by E. Thorndike, L. Vygotsky attributed the lack of: 1) taking into account the social moment in education and 2) a generalizing biological and socio-psychological theory of behavior.
