In the last years of his life, Aleksei Nikolaevich Leontiev talked a lot about the problems of the image of the world in the context of studying human perception. The synopsis of the book "Psychology of the Image" (later called "Image of the World") has been preserved in the archive of A. N. Leontiev, and in December 1978 he planned to start reading an annual course under the same name. The little that he managed to do on the problem of the image of the world bears the stamp of a truly new look at all the traditional problems of the psychology of cognitive processes. To carry out a comprehensive reconstruction of this view, to give an interpretation of the published A. N. Leontiev`s thesis is a very important task that is still waiting to be solved. And this article can claim to contribute only to a very small extent to the solution of this problem.

This article attempts to show that with all the variety of sensory modalities studied by A. N. Leontiev and all the variety of methods he used, his work in the field of perception is characterized by a unity of design, the reconstruction of which is of great theoretical and methodological interest. Unfortunately, the unrealized idea of A. N. Leontiev`s new book, which was supposed to be called "The Image of the World", becomes clear and justified both from a scientific and biographical point of view.

The article discusses aspects of A. N. Leontiev`s theory concerning consciousness and personality, problems of correlation between psychological and physiological levels of activity, historical and ontogenetic development of the main psychological categories. The main provisions specific to the fundamentals of the theory of activity are formulated.

In the article, the basic principles of the psychological theory of activity are revealed in contrast to the principles and postulates of other psychological theories. The following principles are discussed: subjectivity, activity, the maladaptive nature of human activity, mediation, interiorization and exteriorization, analysis of activity "by units", as well as the principles of dependence of psychological reflection on the place of the reflected object in the structure of activity and historicism.
